Jalandhar September 17 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- Lyallpur Khalsa College, a leading institution of Northern India, observed World Ozone Day with an impressive array of activities designed to spread awareness about ozone depletion and its environmental consequences. The event was organized by the Postgraduate Department of Geography and witnessed active participation from students of various colleges across the region. The program began with the registration of over 80 participants, followed by a warm floral welcome to Principal Dr. Rashpal Singh Sandhu by Dr. PoojaRana, Head of the Department of Geography, and faculty members.
In her address, she highlighted the crucial role of the ozone layer as a protective shield in the Stratosphere that prevents harmful Ultraviolet radiation from reaching the Earth. She explained how the thinning of this vital layer, largely due to the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), leads to serious health concerns such as skin cancer, eye damage, and sunburn, while also reducing crop yields, disturbing marine ecosystems, and intensifying climate change. The theme for this year’s World Ozone Day was, “Global Action for a Cooler Planet”, served as the guiding principle for the day’s activities.
A series of inter-college competitions, including Poster Making, Slogan Writing, Model Making, and Rangoli Designing, were organized to encourage students to creatively express their concern for the environment. The contests were judged by a distinguished panel of academicians comprising Dr. Satinder Kaur (SR Govt. College, Amritsar), Prof. Mridula Pushkarna (R.K. Arya College, Nawanshahar), Prof. Amit Kumar (Doaba College, Jalandhar), Prof. Madhu Mehta (B.R. Ambedkar College, Boota Mandi). Certificates were presented to all participants as recognition of their efforts.
In the Poster Making competition Himanshu secured the first position
In the Poster Making competition, Himanshu (Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar), secured the first position, followed by Second position by Manpreet Kaur (Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar), and Simran (SR Govt. College, Amritsar) and Third position by Navneet kaur(SR Govt. College, Amritsar). In Slogan Writing, the first position went to Simrandeep Kaur (Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar), Second position went to Pooja (SR Govt. College, Amritsar), and third position went to Komal Kaur (Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar).
The Model Making contest was won by Divyansh, Sukhdeep Singh and Samridhi, the second position was secured by Aastha, Piyush, Pragati, Nidhya and Varsha,and the third position was secured by Tavleen, Diksha and Pratimaall from the Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar, while the Rangoli Competition was topped by Anjali and Yashita(B.R. Ambedkar College, Boota Mandi) And second position was secured by Kundan and Simran from (Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar).
The program concluded with a pledge ceremony, where all participants committed themselves to reducing ozone-depleting activities, minimizing the use of CFCs, and promoting eco-friendly practices in daily life. On this occasion Dr. Balraj Kaur Head, Department of English, Prof. Kamalpreet Kaur, and Prof. Kartik were also present.
