In an attempt to provide a platform to the students where they can share their innermost feelings/emotions in a safe, comfortable and judgement free environment; the Psychology Forum of ACFA has opened a new Counselling Cell called ” The Listening Room” and to make students conscious and aware, they observed Suicide Prevention Day.
The opening of this Cell was done with a one day Workshop on ‘Importance of Mental Health of Students for Leading a Well Balanced Life’ in which Ms. Aarti Singh, RCI licensed, Clinical Psychologist, Ashoka Hospital, Jalandhar was present as the Resource Person.
Interacting with the students, Ms. Aarti Singh said that there are times when a person feels low and do not feel like doing anything or even interacting with anyone. She asserted this is the hour when one should definitely find their confidante and share what’s happening inside them. In some situations, if this does not feel enough, then one should not hesitate or delay seeking professional help and certainly see the psychologist. She added dealing with the turmoil inside is certainly important and it should not be suppressed for there can be dire consequences of it later like severe anxiety or depression.
Ms. Singh also introduced the students to ‘Cognitive Behavior Therapy’ and ‘Psychotherapy’
Ms. Singh also introduced the students to ‘Cognitive Behavior Therapy’ and ‘Psychotherapy’ and said that being students of Psychology, it is our duty to not only take care of our mental health but also contribute in improving the mental health of the people around us by making them aware of the importance of this subject.
Principal Dr. Neerja Dhingra also expressed her views on this and said that in this techno- savvy and competitive age, today’s generation seems to lack patience and perseverance to face the difficult situations. Consequently, they get disappointed and their mental health suffers. She said that ‘The Listening Room’ counselling cell has been started by with the motto to ensure that students don’t feel unheard and always have a patient listener.
During the workshop, Anchoring was done by Kritagya and Vote of Thanks was presented by Sukhanjot of BA Semester 3rd.
Also, on the theme of Suicide Prevention, the Poster making competition was organized in which the students of Psychology of all the semesters participated. In the competition, Vanshika (BA Sem 5) stood first, Shruti Sharma and Navneet Dhillon (BA Sem 1) stood 2nd, Palak Sharma (BA Sem 1) stood 3rd and Jappahul Kaur (BA Sem 3) and Sanchi Chauhan (BA Sem 1) were given the consolation prizes.
Principal Dr. Dhingra congratulated Ms. Niharika and Ms Harpreet of Department of Psychology for successfully conducting the workshop and ensuring that the students become aware of the sesnitive topics and importance of mental health.
