Apeejay College of Fine Arts Observes World Down Syndrome Day

Jalandhar March 22 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- The Psychology Department of Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, observed ‘World Down Syndrome Day’ to raise awareness and to foster sensitivity toward individuals with Down Syndrome.

Principal Dr. Neerja Dhingra, addressing the students, highlighted that the United Nations General Assembly declared March 21 as World Down Syndrome Day in 2012 to promote understanding and inclusivity for those whose physical and mental development progresses at a slower pace.

The event featured Ms. Damini Tiwari and Ms. Tanya, counseling psychologists, as resource speakers. Ms. Damini emphasized the importance of supporting individuals with Down Syndrome in building self-confidence and cautioned against comparisons with others. Speaking on ‘Understanding Individual Differences,’ she stressed the need to recognize and respect each person’s uniqueness, ensuring a more inclusive and encouraging environment.

Ms. Tanya, on the other hand, shed light on the detrimental effects of drug abuse, urging students to stay away from addictive substances. She explained how substance abuse not only devastates an individual’s life but also disrupts families and communities.

The students of the Psychology Department actively engaged in the session, posing insightful questions, which were addressed comprehensively by the speakers.

Sandeep Singh (President, Psychology Forum) presented the Vote of Thanks and expressed gratitude to all participants while Dr. Dhingra commended the dedicated efforts of Ms. Niharika and Ms. Harpreet Kaur from the Psychology Department for organizing the programme successfully.
