Warm tributes paid to Olympian Surjit Singh on his 42nd death anniversary

Jalandhar January 7 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- The Surjit Hockey Academy, operating under the aegis of the Surjit Hockey Society, Jalandhar, solemnly observed the 42nd death anniversary of the legendary hockey icon and former Indian captain, Olympian Surjit Singh, today at the local Surjit Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park.

The atmosphere at the stadium was one of deep reverence as budding players, seasoned coaches, and sports officials gathered to pay their respects to the “King of the Penalty Corner.” The ceremony served as a powerful reminder of Surjit Singh’s monumental contribution to Indian hockey, particularly his role in the 1975 World Cup victory and his mastery as one of the world’s best full-backs.

On this occasion , Iqbal Singh Sandhu, CEO of the Society emphasized that the Society’s mission is to ensure that Surjit Singh’s flame of inspiration never fades. During the event, the assembled players and officials took a collective pledge to continue his legacy with hard work, discipline, and a commitment to restoring the glory of Indian hockey.

Olympian Rajinder Singh (Daronachariya Awardee) also said that the Surjit Hockey Academy remains a cradle for future Olympians, keeping the spirit of the late legend alive by providing world-class training to the youth. The ceremony concluded with a silent 2 minutes prayer. On this occasion Gaurav Aggarwal, Prof. Balwinder Singh (Coach), Pardeep Kaur (Coach), Sita Devi (Coach), Naresh Kumar Nangal (Coach), Kuldeep Singh and parents of budding players were present.
