Jalandhar September 27 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar the premier institute of Northern India has been a well-known bastion of traditional values. It keeps concern for upcoming environmental issues like global warming, climate change, ozone layer depletion, acid rain etc. So, the P.G. Department of Geography and Department of Environmental Sciences organised “World Ozone Day” to create awareness among the masses to check ozone layer Depletion. The event started with the registration of students of different colleges of the region. More than 110 students attended the event.
The chief guest of the day Principal Dr. Jaspal Singh was accorded a floral welcome by Dr. Pooja Rana, Dr. Jaswinder Kaur and faculty members of Department of Geography. Dr. Pooja Rana, Head of the Department of Geography, highlighted that the Ozone layer is a protective layer present in the stratosphere which prevents entry of harmful ultraviolet radiations. She explained that the continuous thinning of the ozone layer is due to the use of Chloro-fluoro-carb on which causes ozone holes.
Ozone layer depletion increases the incidence of skin cancer, photo burning, and damage to eyesight. It further leads to a decline in the productivity of crops and oceans. There is an increase in global warming and unpredictable changes in global climate. Department organised poster/slogan/model making competition on several topics and students of different collages participated and judgement was done by Prof Sneh Sharma of NJSA Govt. College Kapurthala, Prof. Mridula Kalia of R.K Arya College Nawanshahar, and Prof. Shekhar Kumar of Govt. College Hoshiarpur.

Certificates and momentous were awarded to all participants by the dignitaries. In the poster making competition, Jasmeen Kaur of Govt. College Hoshiarpur took first place in the poster making competition, followed by Bipasha of Doaba College of Jalandhar in second place, and Bobby of Lyallpur Khalsa College and Nivriti Passi of NJSA Govt. College Kapurthala in third place. Additionally, Jasmeen of Doaba College, Jalandhar came in second place in the slogan writing competition, while Bipasha of the same college earned first place. Simranjit Kaur of Lyallpur Khalsa College in Jalandhar took home the top award in the model-making competition, followed by Vijay Laxmi and Namanjit Kaur of the same college.
Harsimran of the Lyallpur Khalsa college for women took third place, respectively. A pledge was taken by all to stop the use of substances/activities which were responsible for the thinning of Ozone layers. Efforts should be made to protect the ozone layer by the stepwise reduction in the use of Chloro-fluro-carbons. Joint input of environmentalists, Geographers, academicians, and Students can go a long way in creating awareness among the public to stop Ozone layer depletion.
Events on these dimensions are targeted to save Mother Earth and will undoubtedly a long way and provide valuable guidelines to young generations to solve problems of the Environment. On this occasion Prof. Jasreen Kaur Head PG Department of English, Prof. Navdeep Kaur Head PG Department of Economics were present. Prof. Onkar Singh, Prof. Kamaljeet Kaur and P.G. students of Geography Participated with enthusiasm to make this event a great success.
