National Nutrition Week

Jalandhar September 7 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- Zoology Department celebrated National Nutrition Week from 1st to 7th Sept. This week-long celebration aimed to raise awareness about the significance of nutrition, promote healthy eating habits, and enhance understanding of balanced diets and their critical role in maintaining overall health. Under the expert guidance of Principal, Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen the event was a resounding success, with active and enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members. The week began with a PowerPoint presentation competition where participants showcased their knowledge and creativity on topics related to nutrition.

Topics included “Balanced Diet for a Healthy Lifestyle,” “Importance of Micronutrients,” “Sustainable Eating” and “Nutrition and Mental Health”. A Seminar on “The Importance of a Balanced Diet” was conducted on the following day by Dr. Ranjana, a renowned nutritionist and health expert working as Chief Dietician in Golden Hospital Jalandhar and Shangara Singh Hospital, Jalandhar. She provided an in-depth presentation on the essential components of a balanced diet, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. The dietician also stressed the importance of portion control, the inclusion of a variety of food groups, and the benefits of a plant-based diet.

Participants were introduced to the concept of mindful eating and the importance of staying hydrated, as well as avoiding processed foods and added sugars. The event was well-received, with attendees gaining valuable insights on how to incorporate balanced nutrition into their daily lives. A quiz was also conducted, testing students’ knowledge of nutrition, diet, and wellness. The quiz was highly competitive and encouraged participants to expand their understanding of nutrition in an interactive manner. In line with the theme of promoting healthy, traditional, and sustainable food options, a stall dedicated to showcasing various millet-based dishes was set up.

Students and faculty members were encouraged to taste and explore recipes using millets such as Ragi, Jowar, and Bajra. To promote creativity and the importance of fresh, wholesome ingredients, a Salad Plating and Recipe Writing competition was held. Participants brought colourful and nutrient-rich salads, beautifully plated, and accompanied them with unique and nutritious recipes. The focus was on including seasonal vegetables, legumes, and grains, promoting the use of fresh and locally sourced ingredients. As part of the celebrations, faculty members actively participated by preparing healthy and nutritious dishes dedicating the day to this year’s theme “Nutritious diet for everyone”, for creating awareness among faculty members as well and highlighting the importance of including nutritious meals in daily routines.

To emphasize the role of physical activity in maintaining good health, a Fitness Workshop was organized. Led by fitness trainers, the session included exercises and tips on staying active, emphasizing the need for a balance between diet and physical fitness. The Judges for the various events were Mrs. Deepshikha, Dr. Saloni Sharma, Dr. Anjana Bhatia, Mrs. Purnima, Dr. Ramandeep Kaur and Dr. Sakshi Verma. The winners were awarded with prizes and e-certificates were presented to all the participants.

Madam Principal, Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen congratulated Zoology Department and appreciated the efforts of faculty members and the enthusiastic participation of students. Dr. Seema Marwaha, Head of Department, emphasised that such kinds of events focus on promoting healthy eating habits and fostering a deeper understanding of nutrition’s critical role in overall well-being among the students. Dr. Sakshi Verma and Mr. Ravi Kumar were the conveners of these events. Lab technician, Mr. Sachin assisted in making all necessary arrangements for the event.
