Apeejay College of Fine Arts organized a 3 day workshop on Folk Art : Sainchi Phulkari

Jalandhar September 19 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- A three – day exhibition and workshop on Folk Art: Sainchi Phulkari was organized at Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar in collaboration with INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Culture Heritage).

Dr. Sudhakar Sharma (Former Secretary, Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi) was present as the Chief Guest.

Dr. Manmeet Kaur who is an excellent artist, researcher and educationist and alumna was present as the Resource Speaker and Major General Balwinder Singh, convener of INTACH Punjab State, was present as the special guest.

Dr. Sucharita Sharma (Director, Apeejay Education, Jalandhar) welcomed them and said that with the inspiration of our Founder Chairman Dr. Stya Paul Ji and encouragement and guidance of Mrs. Sushma Paul Berlia (President, Apeejay Education, Apeejay Stya and Swaran Group and Chancellor, Apeejay Stya University), Apeejay College of Fine Arts always strives to preserve and promote fine arts and folk arts.

She said that the objective of today’s exhibition and workshop is to introduce the students to the endangered folk art ‘Sainchi Phulkari’ and to encourage and motivate them for its preservation.

Dr. Manmeet Kaur said that the Folk art ‘Sainchi Phulkari’ comes from East Punjab

Expressing her views as the Resource speaker, Dr. Manmeet Kaur said that the Folk art ‘Sainchi Phulkari’ comes from East Punjab, District Bathinda, District Firozpur Tehsil Moga. In this 125-year-old folk art, the daily routine of the village’s domestic scenes was expressed through the embroidery of Phulkari. Apart from this, local birds, animals and insects were also depicted in it. She shared that Sainchi Phulkari contains all the elements of fine arts as composition, signs and symbols and drawing remains important in the embroidery of ‘Sainchi Phulkari’.

Sainchi Phulkari is capable of expressing contemporary social life and moral values. This is the art which contains a rhythm in itself and which reaches the inner soul of the audience.In this three-day workshop, students who are interested in embroidery will be encouraged to make artistic Phulkari related figures.

Regarding the exhibition and workshop, the Chief Guest, Dr. Sudhakar Sharma expressed his views and said that this effort made by the college is commendable. Our young generation’s connection with folk art is almost disappearing. These workshops give them the chance to connect with this art again.

Major General Balwinder Singh expressing his views said that the objective of INTACH is to preserve its heritage and to pass it to the future generation. Apeejay College has always been a pioneer in this regard and leaves no stones unturned to pass the heritage and culture to the youth.

Also, on this occasion, Jahnvi Mehta (BFA Semester 8th) who had won Award of Excellence in Graphic Design Technology at World Skills Competition Lyon 2024, was also honored.

At the end of the inaugural ceremony of the workshop, Dr. Neerja Dhingra (Principal, ACFA) expressed her gratitude to everyone and said, ” We try our best to keep the tradition alive started by Dr. Stya Paul Ji and Mrs. Sushma Paul Berlia for the prosperity and preservation of Fine and Folk arts.

She also expressed her gratitude to the Chief Guest, Dr. Sudhakar Sharma, Dr. Manmeet Kaur, Mr. Balwinder Singh, Dr. Rachna Sharma and put forth that their presence will definitely inspire our students as they will surely learn and cherish the experience during this 3 day workshop.

She also acknowledged the dedication and efforts of Ms. Rajni Gupta (Head, Department of Design) Ms Rajni Kumar, Dr. Gagan Gambhir and Mr. Rajesh Kalsi for organizing this workshop and providing this wonderful opportunity to the students.
