Jalandhar September 25 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- The NSS Wing of Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar observed NSS Day. NSS wing had been organizing various activities with the theme ‘Gender Sensitization’ throughout the week from 18th September to 23rd September 2024.

During the week, NSS Volunteers visited various schools in Jalandhar city where they enacted the street play ‘Sparsh’ and also interacted with female students regarding their safety measures. The play gave the message about the safety of women.

Through various scenes and the characters, the play highlighted that the safety of women is paramount and in order to make our society safe and sound for the fair sex, first of all women should be encouraged to learn self defence and also and also the people who actually harass or tease others need to realise that the consequences of the bad deeds can never be good and men should comprehend the fact that teasing or harrassing women is not a sign of masculinity.

Poster making competitions were also organized for the students of various schools on the theme of ‘Gender Sensitization’.

Mr. Bipan Suman, member NGO Pehal, made the students aware of e-waste management. Dr. Swaiyjeet Singh, In-charge, Anti Retroviral Center, Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, gave the message to the students to be aware of HIV-AIDS and drug menace.

Dr. Anil Kumar from Department of Computer Science, GNDU and Programme Coordinator of NSS and NCC was present as the Chief guest during the closing Ceremony.

Principal Dr. Neerja Dhingra received him warmly and said that the dedication and devotion with which the NSS volunteers of our college are doing their responsibilities is certainly commendable. Along with fulfilling their social responsibilities; they are also creating a unique identity for them.

The closing ceremony of NSS Day began with NSS theme song followed by NSS volunteers Akshat and his friends captivating the audience with mesmerizing songs. The emotional presentation of the street play ‘Sparsh’ by the NSS volunteers overwhelmed everyone.

The changes in the status of women from the Vedic period to the 21st century were beautifully shown through the documentary ‘Gatha’. The NSS volunteers moved everyone with their dance performance dedicated to valor and sacrifice of army officers.

Addressing the students, Dr. Anil Kumar said, ” I believe that NSS volunteers first of all need to motivate and strengthen themselves and only then one can become an inspiration for others and bring the required change. He also emphasized on the importance of fitness especially for the young in order to remain physically and mentally healthy.”

Talking about Gender Sensitization – the them chosen by NSS Wing, Dr. Kumar said that it is truly the need of the hour. Also, he put forth that Gender discrimination actually begins from home itself. The paramount change needs to come at home first and one needs to work on their perceptions and thought process and only then the positive change can be brought in the society.

Dr. Neerja Dhingra (Principal, ACFA) and Dr. Simkee Dev (Dean, NSS Wing) honoured Dr. Anil Kumar with a memento. Dr Dhingra acknowledged the hard work and efforts of Dr. Simkee Dev, Ms. Komal, Ms. Rachita, Mr. Diptesh and Mr. Kunj for the success of the programme.
