Jalandhar December 4 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- Sardar Balbir Singh was an eminent educationist, a seasoned statesman, an efficient administrator and a genial human being. He was a benevolent personality who dedicated his entire life for the cause of education and social welfare. He was the mouthpiece of the people of Punjab as a Member of Parliament and a custodian of their rights as a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Punjab. With his far-sighted vision, he contributed significantly in making Lyallpur Khalsa College Jalandhar the foremost educational institution of Northern India.

As the President of the Governing Council of Lyallpur Khalsa College, he guided the institution for over thirty five years to lead it on the path of glory by making marks in the fields of academics and research as well as, cultural, sports activities. With his open minded thinking and modern approach, he revolutionized the concept of higher education in the region by making it skill oriented.

He was the one to make early efforts to introduce vocational education in colleges and was a pioneer in making computer education and technical education a part of the students’ learning. Under his leadership, KCL Group of Institutions flourished into a successful organization. By this effort, the society was provided with traditional education, legal education, technical education and teacher education.

The college has also won Guru Nanak Dev University Zonal Cultural Trophy four times

S. Balbir Singh was an alumnus of Lyallpur Khalsa College Jalandhar. Due to his visionary thinking and sincere efforts, the college is today known as a premier educational institution of Northern India. The College has been recognized as a college with Potential for Excellence in 2016 and as an A grade college by the NAAC in third cycle in 2020. The College has won the General Sports Trophy of Jalandhar Guru Nanak Dev University 24 times. The college has also won Guru Nanak Dev University Zonal Cultural Trophy four times and Inter Zonal Trophy three times.

Sardar Balbir Singh’s birthday on 5 December is celebrated as Alumni Day in the institution and College Alumni Meet is held on this day. This year’s Alumni Meet is also being organized on 5th December in which the old student of the college will gather and refresh their memories of times spent here. The students, staff, Principal and management of the college welcome all old students on the occasion.
