Jalandhar February 12 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- Lyallpur Khalsa College Educational Institutions Governing Council President, Late S. Balbir Singh Ji, served with full dedication for 35 years. Under his able and disciplined leadership, the college created a proud history by taking new steps in the fields of education, culture, sports and research. Under his guidance, the grounds of Lyallpur Khalsa College produced world-class players. To make the students adept at modern education, he brought technical subjects like computers to the college.
Through a combination of traditional and modern education, he took the college to new heights. His dedication and vision towards higher education established such milestones in the Doaba region that even after leaving this mortal world (18 years ago), educationists bow to his thinking.
The sapling of higher education watered by him has now taken the form of a huge tree. After getting education from here, students are earning fame by establishing themselves in high positions and doing well in private and public sectors in the country and abroad as well. While in politics, he kept the importance of education at the forefront. Stepping into inherited politics, he served as the Health and Family Welfare Minister of Punjab in the government of Giani Zail Singh from 1972 to 1977.
He organized the first international level Punjab Style Kabaddi match in England in 1974
During this time, he organized the first international level Punjab Style Kabaddi match in England in 1974. He was a Rajya Sabha member from 1972 to 1977 and was elected as a member of the 13th Lok Sabha from 1999 to 2004. From 2005 to 2008, he remained patron of NRI Sabha of Punjab. While holding various political positions, he spent most of his discretionary funds on health, education and other public welfare works. After his departure from this mortal world on 13 February 2008, to realize his dreams, under the wise leadership of Sardarni Balbir Kaur Ji, President of Lyallpur Khalsa College Educational Institutions, opened technical, engineering and law institutes educational in the Doaba region.
Students are becoming contemporary by getting modern education from these institutions. The entire Lyallpur Khalsa College Educational Institutions family is commemorating the contribution of S. Balbir Singh Ji on his death anniversary on Friday, 13 February 2026 at Lyallpur Khalsa College Jalandhar. The vision of S. Balbir Singh will always guide the society even though he is not physically with us. Let us all join hands and pay tribute to such a philanthropist.
