Jalandhar March 21 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- Department of English of PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar organised a Workshop on the topic ‘Reading Literature in the Age of Algorithms: Does It Matter Today?’ The speaker of the day was Dr. Narinder K. Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of English School of Languages, Literature and Culture from Central University of Punjab, Bathinda.
The speaker expressed his concerns on the ever-increasing use of AI and other digital platforms that have transformed the entire education landscape, specifically the disciplines of Humanities and Literature.
He demonstrated his ideas through practical exercises, wherein students were asked to compose a poem, both, with and without the use of AI. He wanted to bring home the point as to how AI, a convenient tool at our disposal, has curtailed academic development. The richness of reading, analysing and critiquing a literary text, ought to be restored to its lost vigour, and to achieve this, the practice of relying on AI tools must be set aside.
The exercise also encouraged students to reflect critically on the process of learning and creativity. By comparing the outcomes of both approaches, they were able to recognise the value of independent thought, sustained engagement with texts, and the intellectual discipline required in literary study.
President Shri Naresh Budhia, Senior Vice President Shri Vinod Dada, other members of the managing committee and Principal Dr Pooja Prashar applauded the department and its Head Mrs Aabroo Sharma for holding the activity which served as a reminder that while technology may offer convenience and speed, genuine scholarship flourishes through patience, reflection, and the human capacity for interpretation and imagination. Mrs Gurjit Kaur, Dr Indu Tyagi and Mrs Mamta also witnessed the event.
