Jalandhar August 10 (Jaswinder Singh Azad)- Fashionista Club of PG Department of Fashion Designing of Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya celebrated National Handloom Day with great enthusiasm. The celebration featured an informative Exhibition-cum-Workshop, aimed at creating awareness among students about India’s rich and diverse handloom heritage. As part of the exhibition, various traditional handlooms of India were creatively displayed on a map of India, highlighting the distinctive fabrics and weaving traditions associated with different regions of the country. The students of the Fashion Designing Department showcased beautifully designed garments on dress forms, incorporating different traditional handloom fabrics of India.
A Charkha was also displayed as a symbol of Swadeshi textiles, representing India’s rich legacy of indigenous textile production and self-reliance. Addressing the gathering, Ms. Navneeta, Incharge, Fashionista Club, apprised the students that the first National Handloom Day was celebrated in Chennai in 2015 as a tribute to the weavers and artisans of India and to promote awareness about the country’s handloom heritage. The exhibition was followed by an engaging workshop on Phulkari embroidery, conducted by Ms. Gurseerat Kaur. The workshop also highlighted the importance of Khaddar.
Ms. Gurdeep Kaur, Assistant Professor, Department of Fashion Designing, was also present on the occasion. Principal Dr. Mrs. Ekta Khosla, appreciated the sincere efforts of the Fashionista Club and the Department of Fashion Designing in organizing the exhibition and workshop. She applauded the students for their creativity and active participation and emphasized the importance of preserving India’s traditional textile crafts and supporting indigenous handloom traditions. The event successfully sensitised the students towards India’s rich handloom heritage and encouraged them to value, preserve and promote traditional textiles through contemporary fashion.
